Rammed Earth Works

Artist's notes

I started making these pieces in 2008, just after discovering the beautiful clay deposits at Ft. Lincoln, near my studio in MD. In 2009, I installed the Dirt Drawings exhibition at Katzen, and loved the freedom of temporal work, using raw clays directly on the gallery floor.  The rammed earth pieces were a way to continue work using the fresh, raw, unfired clays while still creating an object of permanence. The Dirt Book photos I displayed at Katzen along with Dirt Drawings also informed the rammed earth works…responding to how the camera frames the landscape.
